Introduction

You have to be careful when you get photos from online sources -- these concerns stem from concepts like copyrights, royalty free, fair use, etc. This page does not intend to get into all this stuff -- but you can find more information at:

Several of the free websites allow you to download free images for non-commercial usage, although many even allow unrestricted commercial usage as long as any content is not redistributed or resold. On the other hand, most of the stock photo sites sell images on the royalty free concept -- you pay either for a single image, or you subscribe to their collections.

Whatever be the case, make sure you read every disclaimer or agreement on a site before you download from to make sure that no copyrights are being infringed. If any copyright info is not clear or obvious, you can always email a contact address to find out more.

Stock Photos

Here are a few links to well known stock photo sites:

• Indezine Photos is powered by BigStockPhoto - you can now actually buy just one picture for $1 or 2 rather than subscribe for an entire month or year.
• Shutterstock -- sign up for a cost-effective subscription plan and download 25 images every day (that's 750 each month!) with no hidden costs.
• Fotolia contains over 3 million stock images.
• Absolutvision provides stock images in both JPEG2000 and JPEG format -- they also provide a new free image each week
• iStockPhoto allows you to search from royalty free stock photos, vector art illustrations, Flash movies, and videos.
• Matton has an extensive library of digital stock photos as single images, CDs, or direct download.
• PhotoSpin allows you to choose from stock photos, illustrations, fonts, and clip art.
  
• Jupiter Images is a consortium of many sites that allow you to download stock images, royalty-free stock photography, etc.
• Inmagine provides more than 2600000 stock photos ,images, photographs and pictures.
• Getty Images allows you to search over 600000 digital stock photos and on-line stock photos of creative and editorial imagery and films.

Free Images

• morgueFile is a public image reference archive that allows both private and commercial usage of images.
• Yotophoto indexes several "copyleft" sites and provides a unified search interface.
• stock.xchng contains thousands of free photos that you can use for both personal and commercial purposes.
• Microsoft's Clipart and Media page has an extensive selection of free images to download for users of Microsoft Office applications.
• FreeFoto.com is among the largest collections of photographs for private non-commercial use.
• At Backgrounds Archive, you can download free tileable and desktop backgrounds and wallpapers in both widescreen and regular resolutions.
• Free Images is a resource of photographic images for free use on websites and printed materials.
• Imageafter is a free images and textures database for both personal and commercial usage.
• Gimp-Savvy has more than 15,000 free photos and images consisting of over 1Gb of data.
• Bigfoto provides royalty-free images for non-commercial use.
• The NSSDC Photo Gallery has space related images including photographs of planets, astronomical objects and space missions.
• Images of the World has an extensive selection of low-res travel photographs.
• Free Stock Photos contains photographs from a variety of sources - the images are royalty free for personal and non-profit use.
• Intuitivmedia is no longer free, but they do have a low priced subscription model.

• You'll find over 800 tiled textures at the Ppted background archive (not free).
• In Texture provides royalty free textures for private and commercial use.
• The Forrest.cz texture library has excellent collection of textures available.
• Mega-Tex Studios has downloadable textures for 3d builders and skinners in various categories.
• The Texturator site has tiled realistic textures.
